In September and February, Center students elect four representatives to sit on the Class Committee for a term lasting one semester. The Class Committee (also referred to by its name in Chinese, 班委 “Banwei”) meets with the Co-Directors and selected staff regularly and makes recommendations concerning student activities, as well as academic and residential life, via feedback they receive from HNC classmates. The Class Committee is the sole student organization that may represent student interests to individuals or organizations outside of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center.

The Voting Process:
1、Each student falls under one of four categories: International Male, International Female, Chinese Male, Chinese Female. Students who wish to run must compete against others within their own category that also wish to run.
2、You can only run for the position if nominated, either self-nominated or nominated by another student in which one may accept or deny that nomination.
3、Each student who is nominated and wishes to run gets up to two minutes to deliver a speech to their classmates in either Mandarin or English (some choose both!).
4、Majority votes through an anonymous participant survey grants you office as 班委.
5、Elections are held bi-annually at the start of each semester, and multiple terms are allowed.
Meet the Spring 2025 Banwei!
Female Chinese Student Representative: Li Yanshu 李妍枢, MAIS (International Law)

Hometown: Chengdu, Sichuan Province
Goals:
l Plan an enjoyable spring trip which involved and satisfied almost everyone
l Re-establish the transparent communication mechanism inside Banwei and between Banwei and all the students
The reason I chose HNC:
l I happened to know HNC from the seniors of my undergraduate university, and the interest for such Arcadia arose immediately. As a person who has made “to experience” as my life credo, I want to spend my last phase of my student life in an environment which is different from traditional one.
Keywords of HNC
l Inclusiveness
l On the one hand, HNC provides an inclusive living and learning environment for students from different cultural background, with the facilities make it easier for everyone to expand their interests, where everyone can maximize their strengths or expand their boundaries as much as possible. On the other hand, the students who came to HNC choose to hold an inclusive attitude, hoping to challenge their existing perceptions under such a utopian life, and complete their puzzle for the world through political and cultural communication. It's always fascinating.
Male Chinese Student Representative: Cai Dezhao 蔡德昭, Certificate

Hometown: Anqing, Anhui Province
Goals: To solve the problems feedback by classmates and launch some new activities
The Reason I chose HNC: The diverse cultural exchange experiences at HNC may be helpful for personal growth. Moreover, the area where the school is located has economic and cultural advantages, and the living is convenient. The most important thing is that I want to take advantage of my youth to have some different experience. I happened to know about HNC through Internet. Maybe it's really fate.
Keywords of HNC:
l Integration.
l Cultures blend here. For me, many things are indeed novel experiences. Different cultures integrate and collide here, enabling everyone involved to have their own gains and insights.
Male International Student Representative: Jay Figueredo 范灵珊, MAIS (Energy, Resources, and Environment, ERE)

Hometown: Washington DC, U.S.
Goals: During my term in student leadership, I plan to continue to lead student interest groups on improv, arts, and writing (among others), ensure a fair selection process for the commencement speaker and just all around make sure everyone is having a goofy time.
The Reason I chose HNC: I originally chose to come to the Hopkins Nanjing Center because of its location in Nanjing, China. Due to the impact of COVID-19, I did not have a chance to study in China during undergrad, so I was excited to get the chance to attend HNC and learn about China and practice Chinese in an immersive environment.
Keywords of HNC:
One phrase I would use to describe HNC is "don't worry, we're all crazy here."
Female International Student Representative: Mary Majerus-Collins 孟曼丽, Certificate

Hometown: West Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.
Goals: As Banwei, I’m looking forward to fostering a deeper sense of connection between Chinese and International students.
The Reason I chose HNC: Wanting to branch out from teaching, I came to the HNC during a turning point in my career and is pivoting towards international relations. I was drawn to the MAIA program's academic rigor, particularly HNC and SAIS Bologna's language requirements.
Keywords of HNC:
l Unique.
l I’m thrilled to keep getting involved with such a unique school and community, and excited to bring "HNC’s je ne SAIS quoi" onwards to Bologna next year.
